ElementsXXL 2.54 problem

Post by tgv »

Just want to let you know:

V. 2.54 crashes again Photoshop Elements13 (64), 2 error-messages after each ending of PSE. No matter if alternative shutdown is ticked or not. Seems that the plugin does not unload correct.

"curves" are still crippled; auto-tab crashes the plugin.

Sorry to hear about the crash after exiting Photoshop Elements with ElementsXXL. They do no harm, but I understand that it can become annoying clicking away the crash message.

At the moment there are only two ways that ElementsXXL can exit. Either with or without the Alternative Shutdown check box activated. That means that ElementsXXL either gives back the control to Photoshop Elements when it exits or it does not. Depending on the Windows version and some other factors one of the two methods avoids a crash.

ElementsXXL needs to grab the control over some Photoshop Elements procedures in order to display its menu items and perform certain things. However, as ElementsXXL is a plugin, it has no control over the point in time when it is unloaded from memory and does not know if Photoshop Elements still needs to do some things during the exit process or not. When ElementsXXL is unloaded too early and does not give back the control, then a crash occurs. But if it is unloaded later and gives back control, a crash can occur too.

I am using ElementsXXL every day and I never had a problem with the exit process for over a year. It also seems to work for 99.9% of all users as I only rarely get such a problem report.

I suggest that you try a deactivated Alternative Shutdown check box for some time and if the crashes do not stop after some time, activate it and keep it that way for some time and see if the crashes cease. Also make sure that some extensive background activity is not going on your computer when exiting Photoshop Elements. That could influence the exit process too.

Concerning Curves: ElementsXXL 3 will be available within a few weeks. I will include a new Curves dialog that allows editing all four curves and not just one.

You mean that clicking the Auto button on the Curves dialog produces a crash? I cannot reproduce it here, but ElementsXXL could disable the Auto and Options buttons, which do not work anyway in PSE 13, to avoid that users accidentally click on them.

I'd tried both options; and they did not work.

there is no extensive activity at all whilst shutting down PSE - my 64bit-system has 16 GB RAM, runs on a fast asus-ssd; iGPU is a HD 4000.

seems that I am one of the "0.1 % users" who have that problem with elementsxxl. nevertheless, not any of my other PSE-plugins have caused crashes nor glitches.

btw: to state "thousands are happy with E.XXL - your system is the problem" is not helpful, to say at least.
regards.

Sorry, I did not want to put the blame on your system. It is just frustrating trying to fix problems that occur so seldom and are not reproducible here.

I will send you a test version later that uses a new approach. Hopefully it will work for you.

Harald, thank you for sending two files!

I have overwritten existing files in folders
C:\Program Files\ThePluginSite\ElementsXXL2 and
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 13\Plug-Ins\ElementsXXL

Have two crashes after each shutdown of PSE 13 (64); no matter if alternate shutdown is ticked or not. Each method tried a couple of times.

You only need to replace the plugin at
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 13\Plug-Ins\ElementsXXL\

I changed the shutdown procedure again in the meantime. I will send you a new plugin later today.
