Does such a plugin exist? As an example, open any image and adjust the transparency.

What do you mean with transparency? In Photoshop layers have a transparency/opacity setting.

I recall some Windows-only plug-in freebies that make only black or white areas transparent (as opposed to the whole image as Harald describes), but I don't recall their names and a quick search in my backup folders didn't help... Please try Google.
