have you seen the new Intel commercial? the band makes a cd - and takes a photo and digitizes it and uses some sort of filter to change the photo into a cartoon looking pic.

any ideas on what filter this is?

I am kind of rusty with the Photoshop filters (hence, me checking out this site). I am not sure if there is a direct filter that would do this-- maybe you will have to play around with a couple in order to complete the desired result. Either than that, or I would take it into Adobe Streamline, trace the graphic and turn it into a vector, then work with it in Illustrator to choose stroke thickness, color, etc. I'll keep checking Photoshop filters and try to come up with something that mimics the Intel commercial. I'll let you know if i come up with anything.

If you don't have the formentioned programs (Streamline, Illustrator) maybe try working with the Photoshop Filter Cutout (under Artistic). Like i said before, you might have to work with some other filters or techniques on top of this one-- ie. if you are applying this filter to a face, you might lose some of the detail and therefore need to go back in and beef things up. Hope that helps.

I donīt have a lot of experience, but maybe the virtual painter, with the drawing filter could give you a start. And then work with other filters on top of this one. I hope this can help you.

This is probably not what you are looking for but I just "found" what looks to be an extremely good filter set and it includes a "Toonize" effect - I think I will explore the entire filter as it seems it could be an essential filter for users --- the site is ...http://www.blackbeltsystems.com/ps_so.html

?? see what you think

take a look at amphisoft's simplifier plugin. it might not be exactly what you want but it might save time and it's freeware.

I am a sprintpcs user and I have a camera phone. On the sprint picture website were I upload my pictures, they have a feature to turn your photo into a cartoon. You can even add a comic bubble to type in. It also has the ability to turn your picture into an outline drawing. All these features are available with the click of a button and the quality is excellent IMO. If someone could figure out what software they use then that would be an excellent program to use. The website is powered by Lightsurf so that may be a place to start. If you figure it out post it and let me know also. Good Luck.

Quote:
Buzz Pro 2.0 is a condensed version of the larger program, PhotoArtmaster. It is an easy to use plugin that helps you to be creative with artwork and photos. The types of effects available are: Simplifier 1, 2, and 3, Blur, Blur More, Bright/Contrast, Directional Blur, Edges Color, Edges Mono, Emboss, Gaussian Blur, Pure Color, Radial Blur, Radial Screen, Radial Simplifier, Simplifier HSV, Spread Black, Spread White, and Unsharp Mask. One of the chief attributes of this plugin is the ability to take a photo and apply the Simplifier One, Two, and/or Three modifiers to create a painted effect. Add a variety of the rest of the effects or use individually to build infinite and inspirational creations. I've taken the 3D creation I made below to use as a model for the effects featured in this plugin. You can view a several samples below. If you create an effect that you want to keep, click the Save Stack button. When you have a veritable library of effects saved, just press Load Stack to choose the one you need. It's a very simple plugin that produces amazing effects. Photoshop experts will realize just how valuable Buzz Pro 2.0 really is.

Check out http://www.xero-graphics.co.uk/ He has just recently released set 4 of his plugins. While there isn't a single 'toon' plugin there are several you can use in his latest download and previous ones to get a toon-like effect.

Hi,
Heres something you can try to get the cartoon effect.
In PS go to the filters and select artistic/find edges, play with the sliders till you get the results you like. Then run the AmphiSoft simplifier filter and see what you can come up with. Also helps if you throw in an adjustment layer to change your contrast a little.
Good luck!
