S.O.S. Cannot import MPG video from Sony to Premiere Pro CS4

I cannot import video into Premier Pro CS4 directly from my Sony Handcam (SR5). I believe it is because Sony using it's own codec for MPEG 4 and P.P. CS4 does not support this codec. Is there a plug-in to fix this? I think lots of people have this problem.
