Have a look at ColorWasher at http://thepluginsite.com/products/photowiz/. It has a Highlights and Shadows feature.

It works better than Photoshop's Shadow / Highlights filter in several cases and doesn't have the side-effect of changing saturation and contrast. The only advantage that Photoshop's filters has is that it protects the Highlights better in some cases.

One of the best Shadow/Highlight plug-ins is Digital SHO Pro from Http://www.asf.com, which is a Kodak subsidiary. A fully operational trial version can be downloaded.

Check out Powerretouche Dynamic Range compression plugin.

http://www.powerretouche.com/Dynamic_Range_tutorial.htm

It has none of the flaws SHO and Shadows/Highlights has - like halos etc.
