I don't think there are any news regarding this format. I checked it some time ago and the site hadn't been updated in quite some time. I can't see a reason for not finally launching this format 
Meanwhile I've been using PNG instead of JPG. Although it does have a relatively large size depending on what you use it for it is supported by many browsers (except for the alpha transparency in IE, although who needs IE when there's Firefox?
) and graphic programs.
